Farm Credit East Supports Northeast Farmers through Grants to Farmers Markets

The hundreds of farmers’ markets across the Northeast are an important channel for producers to provide fresh, local, affordable farm products to consumers. In conjunction with National Farmers’ Market week, Farm Credit East recently provided $1,000 grants to six markets to aid their efforts to increase local food access for consumers who may be nutrition insecure or have limited resources. The member-owned cooperative also provided each market with 100 reusable shopping bags, with messaging to support Northeast farmers.

“The grants will help expand access to fresh produce for residents in the communities served by these markets,” said Gus Schumacher, Founding Board Chair, Wholesome Wave. “Markets will use the funds to increase the purchasing power for SNAP and WIC recipients, support Veggie Rx ‘prescription’ programs or offer farmers’ market coupons for at-risk seniors or veterans.”

“Farm Credit East is pleased to support local farmers and farmers’ markets, as well as the local communities these markets bring together,” said Bill Lipinski, Farm Credit East CEO. “Farmers’ markets provide many of our members with an additional outlet to market their products and offer consumers a great place to buy locally grown farm products.”

Markets receiving funds include:

  • Sustainable Cape and Orleans Farmers Market
  • Danbury Farmers Market
  • FarmFresh Rhode Island
  • Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA)
  • Lynn Farmers’ Market/The Food Project
  • Wholesome Wave

This is the time of year when local fruits, vegetables and other farm products are in abundance, so celebrate Northeast agriculture by visiting your local farmers’ market during National Farmers’ Market Week and all season long.
