Farm Credit Awards Efforts to Develop and Promote Northeast Agriculture
May 28, 2019
The Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement Program, a joint effort of Farm Credit East, Yankee Farm Credit and CoBank, recently provided $71,300 in grant funding to 22 organizations for their efforts to support young and beginning farmer initiatives, encourage youth leadership development, and promote northeast agriculture, forestry and commercial fishing.
Recipients include various programs to promote the industry, including recognition programs such as the New York State Agricultural Society’s Century Farm Program. Grants were also provided to the New York Animal Agriculture Coalition’s Dairy Cow Birthing Center exhibit at the New York State Fair and to support the American Jersey Cattle National Convention that is being hosted in New York in June.
Other recipients included programming to support leadership development of the industry’s next generation. Programs receiving funding include the Cornell Dairy Fellows Program, Young Fishermen’s Alliance, the Master Logger Certification Program, and the Maine TREE Foundation’s Teachers Tour. A number of the programs also aimed to support youth education, including the Annual Junior Sheep Show, Grow-a-Row Kids’ Farm Days and the New Jersey Agricultural Society’s Learning through Gardening program.
Additionally, the most recent round of funding supported various programs to engage consumers and connect agricultural producers with the community. Recipients included the Vital Communities Local Food Mart and Food Hub; an Urban Agriculture Program hosted by University of Connecticut Extension; a Pick-your-own Seasonal Guide being offered by Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture, Inc. (CISA); and the Brass City Harvest’s nutrition program.
Eight other organizations received grant funds for projects consistent with Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement’s mission, such as industry recognition and networking events, training programs, and youth education.
