Harvest Is Here. Could Variety-Specific Coverage Better Protect Your Apple Crop?

By: Kelsey Linder

Apple

Apple harvest is underway across New York, and growers are assessing yields, fruit quality, storage and marketing opportunities. It is also time to plan for next season. Beginning with the 2027 crop year, New York apple producers will gain a significant new risk management option: variety-specific crop insurance coverage. This improved option may allow growers to better align coverage with the varieties planted in their orchards.

Historically, many varieties were grouped into broad fresh apple categories for insurance purposes. But modern orchards often include varieties with distinct production practices, costs, storage needs, yield potential and market values. The new structure recognizes those differences by allowing many varieties to be insured individually.

What Is Changing for 2027?

The USDA Risk Management Agency has expanded the Apple Crop Insurance Program so many varieties can be insured separately rather than combined into larger categories. Eligible New York varieties include Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, McIntosh, Empire, Cortland, Ginger Gold, SnapDragon®, RubyFrost®, EverCrisp®, SweeTango® and others. Availability, coverage options and requirements may vary, so growers should review the details with their crop insurance agent.

Why Variety-Specific Coverage Matters

For growers with a diverse variety mix, the change may provide a more precise way to protect the value and risk associated with individual blocks.

Apple varieties can respond differently to the same weather event, and their production costs, harvest timing, storage life and market returns can vary widely. A Honeycrisp block, for example, may carry a very different investment and risk profile than a McIntosh or Gala block.

Variety-specific pricing allows coverage to better reflect a farm's acreage mix and financial exposure instead of blending higher- and lower-value varieties. The result is a risk management plan that more closely matches what is planted in the orchard.

A Better Fit for Modern Orchards

New York growers have invested in new varieties, higher-density plantings, improved production systems and market development. The updated structure brings crop insurance closer to the way those orchards are managed today. For farms with significant premium-variety acreage, it may provide more accurate protection and support more precise coverage decisions.

Review Your Coverage Strategy Now

Harvest is busy, but it is a good time to consider how the new structure may affect your operation before 2027 coverage decisions are due. Ask:

  • Which varieties account for most of your acreage?
  • Has your variety mix changed in recent years?
  • How might variety-specific pricing affect your available protection?
  • Does your current strategy still align with your farm's risk management goals?
  • Are your production records detailed by variety to support Actual Production History (APH) recertification, acreage reporting and future coverage elections?
