The Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement Program, a joint effort of Farm Credit East and CoBank, recently provided $65,000 in grant funding to 17 organizations to assist their efforts to support young and beginning farmer initiatives, encourage youth leadership development, promote diversity equity and inclusion, and advance northeast agriculture, forestry and commercial fishing. Submissions for the next round of grant funding are due by April 1.

2021 was a remarkable year for the nursery, sod and greenhouse industries. After initial disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, customer demand for lawn and garden products surged, and sales were generally up overall for the green industry. Dr. Charlie Hall, of Texas A&M University, gave an overview of the Green Industry outlook for 2022.

The deadline to insure spring crops in the northeast for the 2022 crop year is March 15, 2022. Insurable spring crops include field and vegetable crops such as corn, soybeans, barley, oats, fresh market sweet corn, cabbage, processing beans, processing sweet corn, dry beans, green peas, fresh market beans, tomatoes, tobacco and potatoes.

Last fall, Farm Credit East announced the opening of nominations for the Lipinski Rural Initiatives Award, which aims to recognize innovative and transformational efforts to revitalize Northeast rural communities. The nomination deadline for this award has been extended to February 18, 2022.
