From Farm to Forest to Dock: The Northeast’s $225B Economic Engine
As we celebrate National Agriculture Day on March 24, we recognize the contributions of the hardworking agriculture, commercial fishing and forest products producers to our everyday lives here in the Northeast and beyond.
A Positive Story to Tell
Despite the prevalence of negative headlines about agriculture, the reality for the Northeast — and the nation as a whole — is much more positive. While we recognize there are challenges in the industry, the data tells a story of resilience and strength. Recent statistics show that, even amid uncertainty, 97% of farm loans across the country, including in the Northeast, remain in good standing. This reflects a stable and healthy agricultural sector.
Here in the Northeast, the outlook is particularly encouraging. There are substantial investments in agricultural infrastructure underway, especially in New York’s dairy industry. States like New York, Connecticut and Maine have introduced investment tax credits, making it easier for farmers to reinvest and innovate for the future. These proactive measures support continued growth and position the region’s agriculture for long-term success.
Celebrating the Region’s Diversity
The Northeast is home to a diverse range of agricultural businesses and products, from dairy to greenhouse, fruits and vegetables to poultry and egg production and everything in-between. The region’s consumers, as well as our cooperative, benefit greatly from the diversity we have in our region that many areas of the country do not.
What’s more? These various sectors are significant contributors to the Northeast economy. Farm Credit East’s most recent Northeast Economic Engine Report (2024) indicated that direct ag activity on the farm, in the woods or at the dock, along with food processing and manufacturing, generates $225 billion in economic activity and supports more than 818,000 jobs — that’s worth celebrating not just on National Agriculture Day, but every day!
Saluting the Region’s Agriculture
Beyond the economic factors, farming, fishing and forestry also account for necessary food and fiber products that we all consume and use on a daily basis.
With strong credit quality, ongoing investments and the unwavering determination of the region’s farmers, the Northeast agricultural community has much to celebrate. These successes contribute to the overall well-being of our cooperative and ensure that agriculture remains a vibrant part of our regional economy.
Farm Credit East is proud to support Northeast agriculture, commercial fishing and forest products. Join us in celebrating on National Ag Day, and every day!
