The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) announced that the Enhanced Coverage Option (ECO) will expand coverage to include several fruits for the 2025 crop year and increase premium support to make the coverage more affordable. The ECO will now include apples, blueberries and grapes, providing new coverage opportunities for Northeast fruit producers.

The Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement Program, a joint effort of Farm Credit East and CoBank, recently provided $80,000 in grant funding to 18 organizations to assist their efforts to support young and beginning farmer initiatives, encourage youth leadership development, promote diversity equity and inclusion, and advance northeast agriculture, forestry and commercial fishing. Submissions for the next round of grant funding are due by December 1.

To help the next generation develop the necessary business and financial skills, Farm Credit East is hosting GenerationNext seminars this fall and winter. Anyone who would like to sharpen their management skills is encouraged to attend. Both in-person and virtual sessions are offered.

The deadline to insure Northeast perennial crops for the 2024 crop year is November 20, 2023. Insurable perennial crops include apples, peaches, grapes, cranberries, blueberries, pears and cherries.
